Outdoor Education for Visually Impaired Young People in Wales
This project has resulted from direct feedback from young people who are visually impaired. These young people have expressed the desire to ‘experience the natural world’ so that they could better understand it and take part in conversations and discussions related to the environment, amongst their peers.
We have consulted directly with these young people through the Wales Council for the Blind (WCB) and Action for Blind People. Dale Fort has worked for more than three years with visually impaired children, running 4 courses in total. Within this BLF project we have run a further three pilot courses in the last year and expanded to include Ryhd-y-Creuau, where we have run a further three courses. 64 children in total for the project. The Wales Council for the Blind assists with support whilst Action for Blind People have direct access to these young people to be able to bring them to the centres.
The outcomes of this project include not only environmental outdoor learning but also personal and social development as for many of the children this is the first time they have stayed away from home. There will be another two years for the project to run at Dale Fort
