Saving energy

All light switches have a sticker by them reminding people to turn off lights as they leave the room

It can be quite easy to start to save energy at home. Start by switching off lights or other electical equipment when you are not in a room. This may sound simple but if you make a conscious effort to do this you will see how often you leave them on. Placing small notices by the light swiches or on the TV may help you remember. When replacing fridges and washing machines why not shop around to see if you can find a model which is more energy economic. Also buying energy-saving light bulbs instead of ordinary ones saves energy, and they last longer too.

Reuse

Reusing

If you are creative you could always reuse some of your rubbish to make models, like we do. But also you could use the packages again for their original use, such as soft drink bottles. Rather than buying many small bottles each day for your lunch you could fill a clean reused bottle from a large bottle or with water or cordial to take. This reduces packaging.

Recycle

Recycling

If you separate out your rubbish for one week into plastic, glass, tin, organic compostables, paper, and other waste you will be amazed at how much you don't have to just throw away. Their should be a local recycling centre near your house and your council should be able to tell you where your closest one is or if there are any specialist collections in your area. Also you could think about the packaging when you buy anything to see if there is a brand with less packaging or more recyclable packaging.

Respect

Fair Trade Products

Shop around and try and use Fairtrade products whenever possible. A wide range of products can now be found which are Fairtrade including roses, wine and even footballs!

Environmentally-friendly products

Again shopping around is needed for this. Reading the tables of different brands or in different shops should highlight products such as shampoo which try to be less harmful to the environment, either in their production or use.

Chemicals in gardens and composting

If you are lucky enough to have a garden you might want to try not to use chemicals in it. This will be of benefit to the wildlife within and around your garden. You might want to try and produce your own compost from your food waste. This does not necessarily have to take up much room and will quickly be able to be used elsewhere in the garden.
