This website is an archive of papers originally published in Field Studies Journal, an annual journal produced by Field Studies Council between 1957 and 2003. We think our main audience will be visitors to FSC Field Centres who would like to find out more information about the places that they visit.
You will probably enter this site through the front page. From each page within the site you can search through the 263 papers available as pdf downloads. Either search by Field Centre, by category (Biology, Geography and other subjects) or by date (which lists all the papers in order of publication, as well as volume and issue numbers). Read the following three examples of how you might use this site.
You are a Year 12 AS Biology student who has visited Dale Fort Field Centre to collect data on for your biology coursework.
Either browse papers by Field Centre then choose Dale Fort.
Or browse by category then choose the category which best describes your fieldwork, e.g. rocky shores or saltmarshes.
You are a primary teacher who is looking for research on the subject of out-of-classroom learning.
Select browse by category then choose fieldwork: teaching and learning.
You might also investigate research available at Field Studies Council Campaigns.
You are a Biological Sciences undergraduate who has not visited any Field Centre but whose reading list includes a reference to a paper produced in Field Studies Journal.
For example, a very popular paper is W.J. Ballantine (1961): A biologically-defined exposure scale for the comparative description of rocky shores.
Select browse by date then scroll down to 1961. Select the title to download the pdf.
