Dale Fort

Pembrokeshire Coast

An aerial view of Dale Fort Field Centre

Dale Fort was built in 1856 in an attempt to deter the forces of Napoleon III from invading the west coast of Britain. Its spectacular location near the entrance to Milford Haven provides it with easy access to a wide variety of superb seashores. There can be few better places to study marine biology and ecology. Dale provides an ideal base for exploring the spectacular scenery of The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the centre is close to the famous bird-islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm.

Outdoor Classroom

Coastal habitats include sheltered and exposed rocky shores, estuaries, salt marshes and mudflats, shingle ridges and cliff tops. All are within easy walking distance along with woodlands, grassland and freshwater habitats. Opportunities for physical and human geography are many and varied. Independent inspection in 2007 rated the centre’s teaching quality as “outstanding”. A new building was opened in 2007. Classrooms are equipped with ICT facilities including desk-top and lap-top PCs, digital projectors, inter-active white-boards and wireless internet access. Accommodation in the new building is en-suite and for 2008 there is a new Student Common Room. With our new en suite family rooms, it’s also the ideal place for a holiday course. The Centre also offers courses tailored for Irish schools - please see the Outdoor Classroom for Ireland section for more details.
